So, what is a Hipster and what does it mean to be Hip? These terms are so subjective to time periods, that the meaning becomes muddled when these questions are posed to different age groups. In turn, spawning even more questions, and more confusion.
However, some answers can be quite humorous. This was the case when these questions were asked of my 15 yr old son, Ryan. This was his actual responses...
Mom: "What is a Hipster?"
Ryan: "What?" (Brow furrowed, head cocked and shaking while looking at me as if I just made up some make-believe word.)
Mom: "What does 'hipster' mean?"
Ryan: "How should I know? I've never heard that word before!" (The look of disbelief has turned into a look of sympathy, as if he absolutely now knows that I have just lost my marbles.)
*so much for that one, quick, on to the next question!*
Mom: "What is 'hip'
Ryan: (pause and silence, as if it was a trick question)
Mom: "What do you think 'hip is?"
Ryan: "A... bone" ( a complete, and serious, blank face.)
*several seconds of silence, staring at each other, both in disbelief*
Mom: "OK, what do you consider 'hip'?
Ryan: "Like.. cool?"
Mom: "Is that what you think it is?"
Ryan: "Sure...?" (brows furrowed again)
Ryan: "So, are you wanting to know what cool is, so you can try to be cool?" (eyes bulging)
Mom: (blank, disbelieving stare)
*Mom recovered*
Mom: "Is 'hip' being cool?"
Ryan: "No! Because it will break when you get old!" ( the 'Mom is delusional again' look)
Mom: (I really have no response to that)
Ryan: "Who says 'Hip" anyways?! The only people that say 'hip' are parents that try to be cool!" (rolling eyes, and shaking head and probably thinking "As if!")
Mom: "OK then." ( laughing and thinking "WHAT?!)
Ryan: (silence and still shaking his head as he gets up to leave)
*interview over*
So there you have it! Hipster is not in the English dictionary, 'Hip' is a bone, and parents can never be 'cool'.
Out of the mouths of babes!
